Dr. Samora Ocharo, MD

Dr. Samora Ocharo, MD, is a founder and board member Afya Ngao Africa. Dr. Ocharo obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi, and he is currently pursuing a masters in surgery specializing in urology from the same university.

Dr. Ocharo has served as the primary physician for his community in Kisii for nearly a decade. Over the years, he has observed numerous patients presenting at his clinic with organ failures and various complications stemming from lifestyle-related diseases. This concerning trend inspired him to initiate complimentary screenings at his Level 3 facility, Mogonga Medical and Diagnostic Hospital, with the aim of enhancing health awareness within his community.

We had to amputate the leg of a community member who was suffering from complications brought about by untreated diabetes. We have got to do better for the community. Awareness and prevention is key.

Dr. Harriet Ocharo

Dr. Harriet Ocharo, PhD., is a co-founder and board member of Afya Ngao Africa. She is a recipient of the Top 40 Under 40 Women in Kenya Award for her work in the AI field. She has lived in Japan for over a decade, where preventative medicine is at the core of the national policy, significantly contributing to the overall health of the population. In Japan, everyone undergoes a medical checkup at least annually, a practice that not only helps in early detection of health issues but also fosters a culture of proactive health management.

Inspired by this model, Dr. Ocharo is deeply committed to adopting best practices that can work for the local people when it comes to preventative care, ensuring that culturally relevant and accessible health strategies are implemented. She believes that by integrating similar preventive measures into the local healthcare system, they can significantly reduce the incidence of chronic diseases and improve the quality of life for everyone in the community.

I am determined to use my skills and knowledge to solve social issues in my community. I have a PhD in computer science, and I will apply that knowledge specifically to healthcare analytics to improve outcomes for patients and healthcare providers alike. By analyzing healthcare data, I aim to identify trends and gaps in services, ultimately contributing to more effective interventions and resource allocation. Additionally, I plan to collaborate with local organizations to bridge the gap between technology and community health initiatives, ensuring that my work translates into real-world benefits. Through these efforts, I aspire to create a healthier, more informed community that values data-driven decision-making and prioritizes the well-being of its members.
